Approximately four million Americans have lower extremity wounds that do not heal. They may have diabetes, poor circulation or other health conditions that increase their risk of developing non healing wounds. Chronic wounds on the lower extremities are the leading cause of amputation in America. There are approximately 85,000 leg amputations per year in the United States and over 95% are due to complications from a foot wound that does not heal. In addition, after a lower extremity amputation, only 50% will survive 5 years.
